Our mission is to rescue abandoned, abused, injured, or seized domestic rabbits. With the help of our community partners: law enforcement, animal control, other rescues, veterinary professionals and citizens, we then provide them with top notch veterinary care, spay and neuter and match each of our rabbits with the perfect permanent home. We also rescue, rehabilitate, and release wild cottontails, aim to provide educational services, consulting, and training for the community.
We utilize a "boutique" style adoption strategy.
The traditional definition of a boutique is a small store or organization containing a limited supply of unique high end products. At BBSC, we value every rabbit for their individual qualities and personalities. We keep our volume low so that we can ensure our bunnies are in the best of health, socialized based on their individual preferences and microchipped. We also utilize a multi-step adoption matching process that customizes adoptions to ensure rabbits find their perfect home.
Since BBSC's formation in August of 2019, we have rescued and provided veterinary care to approximately 200 rabbits, 14 of which were from animal control seizures and 10 of which were rescue-to rescue transfers. The remainder were "at risk"- dumped, abused, neglected, abandoned or ill. 120 of these rabbits have been successfully matched with qualified and loving homes. Our adopters are spread throughout SC, NC, TN, and GA.
Per month, we receive approximately 20 new applications from potential adopters, which result in 7-10 adoptions per month.
Every single rabbit that we take in is examined by our licensed exotic animal veterinarian, then spayed or neutered, and socialized with humans and other animals prior to adoption. At the current rate for exams and spays and neuters, these 200 rabbits would cost a community member $70,000 alone- not including treatment and medication for other issues and additional surgeries.
We believe that covering the cost of this before adoption maximizes our chances of success for a permanent home and
eliminates one of the largest issues at hand- unintentional breeding.
During 2020 alone, we have rescued close to 200 wild cottontails from injury or abandonment.
Some of our goals for 2021 include educational outreach, grant applications to secure long-term funding, a stand alone building on the property of Izzie's Pond where rabbits can be housed, host meet and greets, and host "Bunny 101" classes.
We also aim to host collaborative events with community partners and training programs for pre-veterinary students.
